TRENTON, NJ – Today, Independent Women’s Voice released new poll results revealing broad concern among New Jersey voters about New Jersey’s rising energy costs and aggressive state climate mandates.

The statewide survey was conducted by Wick Insights using online panel interviews from May 24–28, among a sample of 600 likely 2025 voters who identify across a spectrum of moderate ideological views (moderate, somewhat conservative, somewhat liberal).

Voters were surveyed both before and after learning about the implications of Governor Phil Murphy’s series of executive actions, including a February 2023 mandate requiring New Jersey to reach 100% renewable energy by 2035. Other executive actions by the current governor included in the poll’s analysis are:

  • A projected twenty percent (20%) increase in utility bills;
  • An estimated $1.4 trillion cost for a full transition to renewable energy; and
  • A ban on the sale of gas-powered vehicles by 2035.

Many voters reported that they were unaware of the implications of the policies. Prior to taking the poll, fifty-four percent (54%) of swing voters and sixty-one percent (61%) of women were unaware of Governor Murphy’s February 2023 executive order.

After learning of the policy and its implications, the number of respondents who ranked energy as a top-three issue jumped 18.6 points, from 45.1% to 63.7% and support for the 2035 mandate dropped by 10 full points.

According to a New York Times report, New Jersey has more aggressive climate policies than California. According to the polling data this reality is concerning to seventy-two percent (72%) of swing voters and seventy-one (71%) of women.

Gabriella Hoffman, director of Independent Women’s Center for Energy and Conservation, said: “Energy is emerging as a top issue for New Jersey voters this fall. Our poll reveals that Garden State residents—especially women—are souring on Governor Murphy’s radical climate policies because they’ve invited higher electricity costs and energy insecurity. Blue states, like New Jersey, could face power outages if they continue to double down on unreliable solar and wind.”
